The „Gheorghe Şincai“ Research Institute of Social Sciences
and the Humanities of the Romanian Academy, in Tārgu-Mureş, originates in the history section
of the Scientific Research Base of the Romanian Academy, which started its activity on the 1st of June, 1957.
At the end of its first year of existence, the institute counted 4 researchers, while, today, a
number of 14 researchers are working here: historians, literary historians and comparatists, and one psychologist. Some of
them are also university teachers at „Petru Maior“
University, The Faculty of Science and Letters, in Tārgu-Mureş. The researchers are
Doctors in Science and candidates for a doctor’s degree.
The activity of the institute is based upon research programs and projects elaborated by teams
of researchers. The themes are related to the history of Roman Dacia, ecclesiastical historiography,
history of the Church and of religious life, the creation of the intelligentsia, historical, cultural and confessional relations
in Transylvania, imagology and comparative cultural studies, Romanian - European cultural and political relations and history
of the Romanian exile, history of European integration, perceptions of the contemporary historical phenomena. Some of the
researchers have contributed to the General Dictionary of the Romanian literature, coordinated by
the Romanian
Academy.
Five works elaborated by the researchers of the Institute have been distinguished with prizes by
the Romanian Academy.

One book has been awarded with the prize of the Association for General and Comparative Literature
in Romania (ALGCR) in 2004, and two by the Writers' Union from Romania in 2004.
Fellowships: a Fulbright Visiting Researcher in New York (2002-2003), a H. F. Guggenheim fellowship, IREX and
Soros fellowships (1998-2000).
The researchers are participating frequently to international conferences abroad, in Europe, the
USA, Canada. They have also made research journeys all over the world.
The Institute organizes international seminars, sessions or conferences every year.
The Year book of the Institute has reached its 8th volume in 2005-6.
